Republic of Moldova Hosted the Business Forum on Sustainable Development

On October 3, 2024, the “SDG Cooperation Forum – Private Sector for Sustainable Development” took place in Chisinau, as a joint initiative organized by the United Nations (UN) in Moldova and the Foreign Investors Association (FIA), in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Moldova.

The SDG Cooperation Forum brought together business leaders, decision-makers, policy implementers, and key stakeholders to discuss and collaborate on innovative strategies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Republic of Moldova.

Achieving the SDGs can only be realized through the joint efforts of the UN, the Government, non-profit organizations, and, most importantly, the private sector. The event highlighted the significant role of the private sector in driving change through the adoption and implementation of sustainable development as part of business processes.

In the context of Moldova’s ongoing EU accession negotiations, the implementation of sustainable development policies by the business community is gaining renewed momentum. The Forum provided a platform to present perspectives on initiating non-financial reporting for Moldovan companies and explored the European market’s expectations from local businesses in terms of compliance with ESG (environmental, social, and governance) practices adopted by the EU, as well as broader sustainability standards.

Foreign investors, members of the Foreign Investors Association of the Republic of Moldova (FIA), shared their experiences in implementing sustainable development policies and practices. They emphasized how updated business processes, including their extension to local suppliers, allow companies to actively contribute to achieving the SDGs. This experience, covering a wide range of sectors, offered relevant examples for other companies, particularly Moldovan SMEs.

Participants at the Forum also had the opportunity to learn about and explore potential partnership opportunities with UN Agencies in Moldova, which are already engaged in joint projects with the private sector. These agencies provided practical guidelines to national companies on sustainable development and expressed their openness to expanding partnerships in this area.
